My Photos of OutKast's #ATLast Festival

9/28/2014

Picture
Here are my shots from Saturday's OutKast show. Part of a three-day, open-air festival in Atlanta's Centennial Park, #ATLast celebrated 20 years of Andre Benjamin and Antwan Patton's hip-hop service to the south, right in the heart of downtown. Shout out to the junior publicist who thought I was going to stay in the media cage and not get into the crowd. Ha! FOH.

A Family Trip to Atlanta's New National Center for Civil and Human Rights

7/20/2014

Picture
The Jordans finally made it to Pemberton Place near downtown ATL to see the recently opened National Center for Civil and Human Rights, where we have a commemorative plaque, and where you can experience things like the sit-in counter (surreal), actual handwritten works from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and much more interactive and eye-opening history of Atlanta's part in the struggle for freedom and equality in America. Check the photos after the jump.

Janelle Monae Twerks For Andre 3000 and More OutKast Counterpoint Photos

4/28/2014

Picture
Because you missed it, here are a whole lot of photos from the April 27th OutKast reunion concert. As far as festivals go, Counterpoint was a little nutty and unorganized (we sat in traffic at the site for an hour and a half trying to park), but complications aside, you can't beat OutKast live in Georgia after more than seven years of not performing together. Hootie-Hoo, my friends. Check the shots.

Rule The Grill: Let D.B.A. Barbecue's Matt Coggin Teach You To Make BBQ Sauce

3/26/2014

Picture
Tickets for tonight are sold out (I know--janky hearing about it now, huh?), but you should still be aware that there's a barbecue sauce-making class happening every month at D.B.A. Barbecue, taught by chef/owner Matt Coggin, who is a ridiculously awesome guy and guru of smoked/grilled meats. Here's what you're missing tonight (my bad!).

Chains & Nuggets: Besides Chick-Fil-A and Cheap Jewelry, Nothing is Golden About Greenbriar Mall

2/22/2014

Did you see the eerie slideshow Gawker promoted this week of dead American mall White Flint's food court? The original post came from a blog called Duck Pie, and the author points out that back in the late '70s when it was new and pretty, this now-doomed shopping center in North Bethesda, MD, was a glamorous consumer paradise hosting black tie events that were attended by the likes of Donna Karan and Elizabeth Taylor. Right. That was the '70s.

Last Night At P'cheen

My favorite hangout in Atlanta had its final day of business this past Sunday. Here are a few of the photos I took as lots of people gave P'cheen International Bistro & Pub a proper sendoff.

The Dope Show: Art Beats + Lyrics

10/27/2013

Picture
Here's a rumor that would certainly be sucktastic if it turns out to be true. Art, Beats & Lyrics, the annual traveling show that started in Atlanta and now includes several other major U.S. cities (NY, LA, DC, … St. Louis?), will end after this 2013 show. Without having spoken to my friend Jabari Graham, a promoter who started the show six years ago with Atlanta artist Dubelyoo, I can't confirm it, but I hope that it's either a wickedly clever promotional play or a vicious lie. Either way, at least it looks like we'll have something new from the same team. Yae-yaeeee!

Anyway, here are some pics of amazing art created by ATL residents, throngs of people enjoying free Gentleman Jack cocktails, and two music legends--DJ Quik and Teddy Riley--performing live.

Fear & Loathing at the East Point Carnival, Which Sucked

10/13/2013

Picture
I am not here to recap the desolate and dry reality of this pitiful excuse for a carnival. I will not discuss how I was gypped (ha! because carnivals are run by gypsies!) for an extra dollar because they charge for two people if an adult has to accompany a child that's too short to ride an attraction by his/herself. I won't even revisit the fat woman on the concession cart who tried to charge me $5 for a caramel apple when the sign right in front of her said it was $4, and she still tried to stick to her spoken price.

I will merely turn this blog post over to my special correspondent, The Booger Bear, who will narrate a slide-story of images taken yesterday at Downtown East Point's carnival. The journalism is in her facial expressions, and the story is clear: East Point's carnival SUCKS.

#NABJ 2013: Photos From Orlando, Vol. 1

8/1/2013

Picture
MJ is in Orlando at the Gaylord Palms, keeping it truthy for the annual convention gathering of the National Association of Black Journalists. I'll be posting cool stuff as I collect and configure it for my use, but here's a quick slideshow for starters of the scene. Peep it, and be sure to check back tomorrow for photos of a panel with the parents of the late Trayvon Martin, and so much more.
